Fulton Community School & Farm is an early childhood education (preschool) program located on over 3 acres serving 75 children ages 2-5 years old. The outdoor environment plays a significant role in the educational experience, with the farm and nature aspect providing children with direct contact with nature, enhancing their learning through practical, real-world experiences.
Respect and honor the whole child. Our environments inspire curiosity while supporting each child’s cognitive, social, and emotional growth. We support children as citizens of the world, encouraging each to follow their imagination into deep discovery resulting in a lifelong love of learning. We work with families and our community to build a healthy foundation for the future.
The program offers nature-based learning experiences, heavily inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. This educational philosophy emphasizes child-directed learning, where children explore their interests through hands-on projects and teacher-guided provocations. The curriculum is flexible and allows for in-depth exploration of topics that captivate the children's curiosity while also fostering critical thinking, communication, and collaboration abilities.
Learning at Fulton Community School & Farm is guided by social constructivism, where knowledge is built through social interactions and cultural contexts. Children engage in rich social interactions and environmental provocations, constructing knowledge collaboratively through dialogue and shared perspectives, making learning an active, social process.
Children engage in project-based learning, where they apply their knowledge to real-world challenges related to the children’s lives and the environment. Projects may include garden design, family culture studies, storytelling, and art studio exploration.
Children develop important social-emotional skills through teamwork, problem-solving in project-based learning, and participating in community activities. We foster a supportive and inclusive environment where children collaborate and practice communicating effectively.
Children participate in the daily operations of the farm, including planting, tending to plants, harvesting, and caring for animals. This hands-on experience helps children develop practical skills and a deep connection to the land.
Children experience the entire food system, from seed to table. Children explore food production and the importance of food systems and the environment in promoting community health and sustainability.
We use sustainable practices, such as reusable materials, organic farming, water conservation, and composting. Children practice the principles of sustainability and how they can be applied in everyday life.
We emphasize the importance of mental and physical well-being, incorporating mindfulness practices and encouraging children to spend time in nature.
